We get really excited when we see folks trying to live in an “alternative” and sustainable fashion. Sanda and Brian started the San Mateo Ecovillage as a testament and example that people can live sustainably and communially in a suburban environment. They own two apartment complexes on the waterfront of San Mateo. They grow a lot of their food in the garden and have made additions to their first building using mostly recycled materials. We love documenting these kinds of projects where people are taking action to live closer to each other and with the land.

I love what they’re doing at San Mateo Ecovillage. It kind of falls under the category “cohousing cousins”, as it hasn’t (so far) followed some of the key elements of cohousing, including private ownership of individual units. But watching it evolve has been inspirational.

actually they do encourage private ownership of individual units. the reason we found The Ecovillage is because a friend of ours bought a unit in the second building.

I absolutely agree with this vision…community, communication and choice.

And of course… canvas grocery bags! Where is the advertising campaign for that? It is such an easy thing to do.

    R,
Thank you for being a pioneer and bioneer in practicing and promoting green-related behavior.

There’s a growing # of folks emerging into this movement who share a common goal of sustainability and green-mindedness — a new bread of contributors are rapidly emerging — people who have their hearts and priorities correctly aligned with taking responsibility and sharing stewardship for ecological practices for the benefit of all living life on this planet.

Let’s all be careful to practice tolerance, acceptance, and inclusiveness for all people who enter into the practice. We can all remain diverse while being eco-friendly. We can practice our individual personal freedoms, have diverse political beliefs, come from various social-economical backgrounds, and exercise an array religious beliefs, or none at all.

The issue of saving our planet and connecting to nature is much bigger than worrying about what color flag we are flying, or which bumper stickers cover our bumpers. Practicing and promoting green is more important than engaging in political/religious arguments. This is often were we loose momentum and become divided. Instead, let’s unite under the flag of “green”. We need to educate/teach, and bring every human into awareness around this.

Let’s keep our thoughts positive, offer good words, and be set the example for others.

    R.

    agreed.
The real change is when we can live in practical communities. Live well and other things will fall into place.
