Savirti is one of our traveling crew here in India. She has taught us much about what rural Indian villages are like. She works for M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to empowering rural communities through technology. In this interview she talks about what kind of practical technology villagers are using to get information about healthcare etc. Savirti, as well as Sheel from the last post, are part of a growing number of youth working with rural villagers in India to help expose them to technology for use in education and healthcare.
Sheel just e-mailed me this info about a similar organization that he volunteers with, Indicorps. Any young Indians around the world interested in working in rural India should check out their fellowship program which is starting again in January. Anyone interested in working in rural communities through M S Swaminathan Research Foundation should check out their job postings.

this clip tells us “only” of the great work that savitri is doing..
what it doesnt tell us is what all she has had to give up to do what shes doing – giving up a comfortable, sheltered lifestyle in a big city to go and live in a village, to care for people she doesnt even know… just because theyre her countrymen in need of help.. people who will never understand how difficult it is to adjust to living in a village, being used to all the luxuries in life, all her life.
my respect and admiration knows no bounds..
Savi.. i loved the video and i cant tell you how incredibly proud i am of you and what you are doing..
and as usual u absolutely read my mind in the end of the video coz i was just going to ask you if i cld come and join u for a few days in jan!!!!:)
what the f!… sheelishungry.com for another post on this blog. Jetlag only works as an excuse for so long.
I love that you are documenting stories like this. Stories that show the positive and altruistic change that people are capable of creating.
I have studied how telemedicine works as a technique for reaching rural communities. It is a controversial phenomena in social work because from a holistic perspective it can lead to the “quick fix” mentality. But it seems to work well in this circumstance.
Well done Savitri, good to see your video!! When are you gonna b a tech gal
Good work Ryan,gr8 to see videos from common people…kudos…
