The places it gets me the most are when you're in the drugstore and you buy like one little thing and they put it in a bag. i always tell them I dont need a bag, and half the time they look at me like I must be crazy. what - dont you think I can carry my one little prescription out in my hand, or in my backpack? I'd love to see this attitude make a large-scale change... its all about awareness, attention, and being awake to what's really important. And plastic bags just arent that important in the grander scheme of things. It does feel good to walk out without using plastic bags! Would be really interested to see something from somebody who made that happen. Why only grocery stores, though - seems a politically unwise choice...? More and more stores here are switching to biodegradable plastic bags. I went to a lecture last year given by a guy who makes these, and he said 4 billion plastic bags are used in the UK each year. We have a fifth of the population of the US. If that scales proportionally, that'd be 20 billion plastic bags per annum in the US. Imagine what that'd look like, all in one place. We don't even get to choose between paper and plastic here, though - we just have plastic. Anyway, composting : city councils here shy away from it... but some rural councils are making it compulsory.
