1st of the Month? Make a GREEN Move!

Seeing a lot of furniture and used junk on the sidewalk? Must be moving day in your neighborhood! With a little extra pre-planning and the right resources, you can make moving a green experience. Go through your closet, your desk, your entire apartment- decide what you absolutely need and recycle the rest! Recycling can take the form of reselling on Craigslist or eBay. Donations to Goodwill and Salvation Army are perfect examples of re-use. Find electronics and battery recycling centers near you through Earth911.org.

We’ve moved 3 times in the last 3 years and have become experts at selling all our stuff online. If we find that we need a certain item again after we’ve moved (like a desk or some chairs) we cruise Craigslist for cheap or free deals. When we move again and can’t fit them in our car, we put them back into the cycle and sell or give away!

I’m so used to living in a crammed apartment full of crap. FULL! When we started the slow move to the house I was amazed at how happy I was that there was no clutter whatsoever. That’s when I realized I have to unload upwards of 50% of the items I own. Seriously. I don’t know where all this stuff comes from (actually I do: ebay) but it’s all going back (to ebay and Goodwill).

Funny: Brian just replaced that Pismo powercord about a month ago. He searched everywhere for it, and it was in your closet all along!

    Brilliant.
I’ve also used Freecycle.org, but you don’t get cash for your stuff, you just get love :)

I’ll keep all that in mind when I’m out of this town in June.

Of course this requires that you be Not Attached to Things. My husband wants to bring home stuff we already have from New Jersey, so we’ll have spares. Arrgh. Of course, some of the stuff is well-crafted furniture that isn’t made that way anymore, and I actually do want that.

Anyway, this video is full of great advice. Thanks for sharing your moving expertise.

I can sell stuff on Craigslist?
I can take stuff to Goodwill?
I can leave it on the street?
    I had no idea…
Jesus, I am so slow not to realize this already!

    hey michael,
yes you can! and you should!
though i wouldn’t recommend leaving things on the street, like you say.

Watching some back video these days, finally have some time. I want to move back to the states for good. Watching these videos induce action, it’s good, and you’re doing good work. Keep digging.

Good for you. I’m sure each time you move, it gets easier too, as you pare down to what you actually use.

That’s really cool. I just moved again a few months ago, and I didn’t do the smart thing like you guys. Now I have my basement full of junk, and I don’t know what to do with it. I guess part of it is that I’m nervous about using Ebay and/or Craigslist since I’ve never sold anything on them, and I don’t know how I’d ship an air hockey table.

On the plus side, since I moved I got single sort recycling and I’ve been militant about actually recycling “all” recyclables.
