San Francisco’s Department of the Environment is leading the initiative to fully redesign Treasure Island- a 400 acre human made island in the San Francisco bay. Originally built for The World’s Fair in 1939, it’s been used as a movie studio, a naval base and now for residential housing. By 2020, the city plans to have this little plot of land revamped and functioning as green as possible. Jennifer Kass, from the Dept of the Environment, explains the city’s process of planning holistically with all aspects of urban living in mind. Treasure Island could possibly inspire future models of sustainability because of its unique geographic challenges. From transportation to green open spaces to building and construction to where you get your groceries- if it can happen self sufficiently on a 400 acre island, maybe it can happen anywhere.
