This squabble on NewWest.net caught our eye because we raise chickens in a semi-urban area and feel nothing but joy about it. It’s interesting to see this issue come into the lime light as resources start to become scarce. Jay made a response video on Momentshowing to all the chicken naysayers. C’mon people, we need to be more resourceful with our food and our land! No Safeway or Food Lion is going to do that for us. The great benefits of raising chickens include having fresh eggs, producing compost (chickens eat and poop food scraps and scratch through yard waste to make potent soil) and if you’re into it- totally chemical free and humane meat.

I just had to find out, so I did a search at newwest.net and found out that they did pass the chicken ordinance in Missoula. Yeh, for our side. Actually, I also read 100 things I love about Missoula, and it sure made me want to visit.
We miss you guys. The chickens are laying up a storm. We are eating their eggs (Dale made an amazing flan with fava beans on it a few weeks ago at the community dinner), selling eggs to friends and making new friends selling them to folks who pick up their CSA boxes here at San Mateo Ecovillage.
Good to hear they allowed chickens within the town limits. Where we are now in Virginia, animals are everywhere in town. We hope to have some chickens of our own soon.
