When I was a girlscout leader we made them with the sawdust from my dad's workshop we had saved over the last year.

Each girl would bring in a cardboard type eggcarton.
Fill with sawdust.
Pour melted wax over.
Cool and then just cut apart each of the egg partitions. Worked great for camping, not sure about using it in your stove. :)

My son learned in Boy Scouts to use cotton balls dipped in vaseline as a fire starter. I had never heard of such a thing. But it does work to start the woodstove when there are absolutely no coals. Not sure how it would help you in a wilderness situation, though, since you are unlikely to find cotton balls and vaseline just sitting around!
Here's my adventures in woodstove life:

It's basically the same thing you buy in the store. Usually they have sticks soaked in kerosene. Or sawdust bricks In wax. If you assme you can find old candles and newspapers, it's all free.

Nice tip Jay, I have a wood burning fireplace on my 3rd floor that I'll have access when tenants move out next month. But is this much better than the fire starter products that do the same thing?
