Each girl would bring in a cardboard type eggcarton. Fill with sawdust. Pour melted wax over. Cool and then just cut apart each of the egg partitions. I had never heard of such a thing. But it does work to start the woodstove when there are absolutely no coals. Not sure how it would help you in a wilderness situation, though, since you are unlikely to find cotton balls and vaseline just sitting around!
