This video needs a little explaining. If you’ve ever read What the Dormouse Said, you know that Douglas Engelbart was the man who created the mouse in the late 1960’s.
He is also well-known for two important things. First, he wrote a 1968 paper titled “Augmenting Human Intellect: A Conceptual Framework” which lays down the framework for most of the computer user interface ideas that exist today. Secondly, he made a famous presentation in 1968 with his research team where they publicly showed off hypertext, email, video conferencing for the first time ever.
Unfortunately, Englebart who is now 81, feels that many of his ideas of “augmenting human intelligence” were never fully realized. The problems we face today are on such a global scale that we must learn to better deal with the deluge of information available to us. In personal computing, the driving force has been to make everything as easy as possible. Englebart pushed for systems to improve individual and group processes for knowledge-work, which did not always produce software that was easy to use.
In our short video, we caught Doug speaking with our good friend, Brad Neuberg, who created HyperScope 1.0, an online version of the 1968 Augment system. The HyperScope project is “a browser component using Ajax and DHTML designed to replicate’s Augment’s multiple viewing and jumping capabilities (linking within and across various documents)”. It’s open source and wide open for play.

We recently met Tanja and Oscar from Freshtopia at the Off The Grid Meetup in Montana. They live in Oakland and produce a kick ass videoblog about raw foods and the new green movement happening throughout the world. We recently did some work for Technorati and realized “Hey, these kids are rad!” and we thought we’d help expose you all to their techie coolness. Technorati is a blog search engine that helps you find content on blogs through tags. A lot of people have been baffled by (and sometimes annoyed at) how the technology works- “Why are those people in the Top 100?” “Why haven’t my tags shown up yet?”.
