Transparency Camp Video Goodness

We recently attended and made videos for Transparency Camp hosted by The Sunlight Foundation and iStrategy Labs in DC. They invited the policy wonks and tech geeks to hang out, hack, brainstorm and collaborate. It was a great step towards getting online government transparency to be a reality. OpenCongress.org: What’s Happening In Congress?

Truth or Consequences, New Mexico: Land of Pioneers

As some of you might remember, we traversed through T or C last year and taped a bunch with Mikey and Wendy of Green Acre Hotsprings. On our way over to Virginia, we have stopped by again to catch up and meet some new folks hacking out here in the desert. The photo above is us taping an interview with Asher, who sells biodiesel and WVO (waste vegetable oil) for fuel in Mimbres, NM. He also has an off the grid household with solar power, a humanuare outhouse, a greywater system and a newly planted food garden.

We also got Mikey hooked on No Knead Bread and he’s successfully cooked two batches in his kick ass solar oven. I was incredibly skeptical of the solar oven at first, but when i saw it jump from 0-300 degrees in about 10 minutes, I was sold.

We are excited to post all our videos from our cross country trip as soon as we get settled in our new home. Stay tuned!

Free as in Freedom: The Free Software Foundation

Ever since we interviewed John Sullivan, Campaigns Manager for The Free Software Foundation in Boston, our heads have been spinning with the possibilities that ‘Free as in Freedom’ Software holds. If you’re looking at this on the web, you’ll see that our site is a pimped out WordPress blog- a free and open blogging platform. There are lots of crazy thumbnails and video playing plug-ins that we’ve helped to build through our collaborative Show-In-A-Box project. All of this is possible because of Free and Open Software.

Free is the idea (and the reality) that people should have the right to use their software in any way they see fit. Modifications, hacks, customizations and copies-lots of copies- should be allowed. If you’re using any operating system besides GNU-Linux (this would be Mac and Windows and a huge percentage of the population) and proprietary software made by these companies and many others, you literally don’t have the right to change, copy or distribute any of it. That CD you made your friend of that cheesy FTP program? Nope, that’s totally illegal. Unless of course it’s Free Software (like my favorite FTP app, Cyberduck), then it’s wholly encouraged for you to share and even open up the code and modify it and share it some more.

We love free software because as people with big imaginations and some techy, smart developer friends, we can build things the way we want them rather than wait for a big corporation to build them for us. We have the Freedom to share our code and encourage others to modify and share alike. Much like Creative Commons, The Free Software Foundation embraces copyleft which gives both creator and user the freedom to work together.

We know Brad from a little experiment called Co-Working at a fine establishment known as The Hat Factory. We’re happy to see that Brad is working on one of his own, open source projects with some help from the folks at SitePen. Dojo Offline is a toolkit that enables developers to incorporate offline capabilities into their apps. It’s always encouraging to see other freelancers get gigs to build their own projects. MonkeyBrains.net: Keepin It Real for a Decade

Sustainability can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. In Silicon Valley business terms it can mean sink or swim in an ocean of sharks. MonkeyBrains is a local, independent ISP (internet service provider) that started up at the height of the last boom and is a shining beacon of hope that companies can come out of a bubble alive and kickin’.

We first met Alex from MonkeyBrains when he hooked us up with killer WiFi and Live Video streaming for Vloggercon06 at The Swedish American Hall. The MonkeyBrains crew did such an amazing job and were so cool under pressure that we felt the need to dig deeper to hear their story. Thanks Alex and Rudy for having us over!

We first met Darius through the Coworking experiment at The Hat Factory. Spending even a few minutes with Mr. Roberts and you will surely find out that his passion is transit. Selling Out Isn’t Easy

We have just signed a one-year deal with Podtech to license our videos on “sustainable culture”. For over 2 years now, the Videoblogging Group has discussed money and advertising. We’ve always been a pretty big opponent of traditional models creeping into our new art form. Check out this video Jay made in 2005.

Here are three reasons the deal made sense to us.

We own our content. After a year, Podtech will have paid us to create a library of videos. They didn’t even flinch when we negotiated this point. They deserve credit for this alone. Podtech will have exclusive rights to put ads on our videos.

Shows are different than our personal videoblogs. Ryanne and I each have our own blogs where we’ll keep posting our crazy videos. Advertising would never work there. But RyanisHungry is our attempt to create themed content that basically takes the best part of TV viewing and applies it to the web. We’ll be focusing on personal stories of people changing their habits. Here’s an example of what we’ll be doing. So far, Podtech has made clear that we have artistic control as long as we focus on sustainable culture.

Guaranteed money. Podtech is giving us a set amount of money each month. We certainly aren’t getting rich, but one of us can work on these videos full time since it’s content we believe in. I’m not sure I trust the “advertising revenue sharing” that other sites like Revver are pioneering just yet. To me, only the most popular videos can make a decent living for ads clicks. I also don’t have time to go out and find customized sponsorship.

I hope that we can set the example for future deals that will be fair to both videobloggers and companies. I give Podtech props for being so progressive during this honeymoon period. We expect to continue working well together. I give a big shout out to Morty Wiggins and Colette Vogele (who wrote the Legal Guide for Podcasters) for helping us through this process.

So watch our for the first videos starting on January 15th. Two videos a week for a year. oh boy.

Eric Case on Blogger Beta

As we mentioned in the previous post, Eric Case works on Developer Relations at Google, he has also worked on the Blogger team for several years as well. We majorly love Blogger-it’s super customizable, videobloggable and FREE! We have been touting Blogger since day one on Freevlog.org, because it’s easy for beginners to just pick up and go. We all know that in the last two years WordPress and Six Apart have grown a bunch while Blogger seemingly remained stagnant. Finally Blogger fans can rejoice as Blogger gets a supreme overhaul with the inclusion of labels (catagories), the template editor of our dreams, instant publishing (no more spinny thing) and a streamlined dashboard.

Many of us die hard users have been skeptical of Blogger Beta (when I switch over will my blog get messed up?!) and nervous because of the many many outages and errors that have been happening recently. This is why we were so excited to have the chance to sit down with Eric and get the details on what is going down at Blogger Beta. Enjoy!

Scott Beale Explains Laughing Squid

All we wanted to find out was: “What is Laughing Squid?” It’s a web hosting company, a blog, a photo stream, the Squid list, and as we found out….Laughing Squid is a way for Scott to help organize all his activities as they evolve. Scott is an instigator, an experimenter, a businessman and guy with a lot of great t-shirts. Check out this interview where every story Scott tells leads to 5 more stories. This short interview doesn’t do him justice, but it’s a start.

Being new to San Francisco, we’re always interested in hanging out with the people who have lived through the past tech booms and busts. Scott Beale is even more interesting because he’s seen how multiple communities in SF have evolved since he arrived in in the mid-90′s. He has actively tried to merge the art and tech communities together while documenting this process. You can see Scott in action and be part of this process at the 11th annual Laughing Squid Party.

Savitri Bobde: Technology in Rural India

Savirti is one of our traveling crew here in India. She has taught us much about what rural Indian villages are like. She works for M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to empowering rural communities through technology. In this interview she talks about what kind of practical technology villagers are using to get information about healthcare etc. Savirti, as well as Sheel from the last post, are part of a growing number of youth working with rural villagers in India to help expose them to technology for use in education and healthcare.

Sheel just e-mailed me this info about a similar organization that he volunteers with, Indicorps. Any young Indians around the world interested in working in rural India should check out their fellowship program which is starting again in January. Anyone interested in working in rural communities through M S Swaminathan Research Foundation should check out their job postings.

We met Sheel in India, and had a 36 hour train ride to learn about the work he’s doing with Kiva.org. Basically, the website allows you to make small loans directly to entrepreneurs in developing countries. Kiva finds these projects that need funding through non-profits in the local area to help guarantee that the money will be used appropriately.

We would love it if Kiva were to post videos of projects that have been funded. The big potential is to get conversation to happen between the funders and the entrepreneurs. Maybe they could share valuable information and contacts as well as the necessary money.

Here’s the intro day at the Airjaldi Summit in Dharamsala, India. It’s pretty amazing to see about 200 people show up from all over the world to discuss how wifi networks can spread in developing communities. Dharamsala is a good example of how intelligent use of appropriate technology can help a community get online. The big question is: what are people going to be using the web for? From our initial research, it seems the Tibetan community is using it to do Voice Over IP, as well as helping local businesses connect to the outside world. By teaching some workshops later next week, maybe video can become a part of their online experience.

When we first moved to San Francisco, we met David Weekly at Super Happy Dev House where he told us about some site he made one day: PBwiki (Peanut Butter Wiki). We fell in love with PBwiki and created about 22 wikis in the last four months. We use them to organize lots of our current projects: Have Money Will Vlog, Sustainable Route, Node101.

What is a wiki? From wikipedia:

A wiki is a type of website that allows the visitors themselves to easily add, remove and otherwise edit and change some available content, sometimes without the need for registration. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for collaborative authoring.

So no longer do you need to wait for the “website” guy to update a page. Anyone motivated can now update the site themselves without fear of screwing anything up since all changes are recorded. You simply cannot permanently damage a wiki.

Check out this interview we did with our new, favorite, geek friends. They have a great philosophy and approach to the community, as well as business.

Violet Blue: Our Front Page News

The line between “big media” and blogging continues to blur. Violet Blue, the well-known sex blogger and podcaster, is now officially joining a newspaper founded in 1865. She starts tonight when her column is posted to the SF Chronicle’s online newspaper, sfgate.com.

Go read her first official post (and Violet’s columnist page to easily find future posts). As you’ll hear her explain in the interview, the SF Chronicle took out all the links in her post, but you can see them all on her own blog. (Huh? Yeah.) Obviously blogger and old newspaper must do a little more dancing to get things right. She’s clear that it’s still an open conversation as they figure it out.

Speaking with Violet, Ryanne and I were amazed at how right-on she is.
Violet speaks of how the deal with the SF Chronicle came about…and how she continues to fight to teach them how bloggers operate. Links, transparency, etc. As more of us start producing content for traditional outlets, I think we’ll all have Violet to thank for setting a good, strong example. I love that the intelligence of the blogging culture is finally seeping into mainstream media.

Josh Wolf Update: Out On Bail, For How Long?

We got to talk to Josh Wolf a week after he was released on bail from prison where he has spent the last month. After getting much press and support, Josh hoped to win an appeal of the Contempt of Court against him. Unfortunately, the 9th Circuit Court denied his appeal. You can read the full story here.

From The SF Chronicle:

“Obviously, it’s disappointing,” Wolf said Monday. He said he had offered to give (Judge) Alsup a private screening of his footage, which he said does not depict the alleged attempt to burn a police car. Wolf said that if he turned over the footage to prosecutors, it would “have a chilling effect on myself, gaining access and trust with contacts, and have chilling effect on journalists in general, knowing their information can be subpoenaed at any moment.”

This interview with Josh is about 15 minutes long but contains:
–a concise summary of his case
–a description of a Grand Jury
–what it was like in jail
–and two new projects Josh has planned to help others in his situation.

Doug Engelbart and Brad Neuberg: HyperScope

This video needs a little explaining. If you’ve ever read What the Dormouse Said, you know that Douglas Engelbart was the man who created the mouse in the late 1960′s.

He is also well-known for two important things. First, he wrote a 1968 paper titled “Augmenting Human Intellect: A Conceptual Framework” which lays down the framework for most of the computer user interface ideas that exist today. Secondly, he made a famous presentation in 1968 with his research team where they publicly showed off hypertext, email, video conferencing for the first time ever.

Unfortunately, Englebart who is now 81, feels that many of his ideas of “augmenting human intelligence” were never fully realized. The problems we face today are on such a global scale that we must learn to better deal with the deluge of information available to us. In personal computing, the driving force has been to make everything as easy as possible. Englebart pushed for systems to improve individual and group processes for knowledge-work, which did not always produce software that was easy to use.
In our short video, we caught Doug speaking with our good friend, Brad Neuberg, who created HyperScope 1.0, an online version of the 1968 Augment system. The HyperScope project is “a browser component using Ajax and DHTML designed to replicate’s Augment’s multiple viewing and jumping capabilities (linking within and across various documents)”. It’s open source and wide open for play.

Ever since last week’s Hot Air video, it’s become clear that there are many misperceptions about Josh Wolf’s case. One myth is that Josh is not a journalist. The argument is that he’s just a guy with a video camera. And if anyone with a blog can be a journalist, then everyone is a journalist. Well, someone thinks Josh is a journalist.

“The Society of Professional Journalists put up $30,000 on Friday to defray the legal expenses of Josh Wolf, the San Francisco freelance journalist who has been in jail since Aug. 1 for refusing to turn over videos of a political demonstration to a federal grand jury.”

We did a brief interview with Jackson West to dispel some of these myths. Jackson has been trading snail mail letters with Josh…which allows Josh to keep blogging.

Putting politics aside, many people don’t seem to realize how the case relates to each of us. Saheli Datta said it best:

To spell out for people what’s wrong with this picture—if journalists have to hand over their outtakes and their notes and negatives, if every camera–even a journalists’s camera–at every protest or gathering automatically becomes federal property, nobobdy will talk to us, and nobody will let us take pictures of their gatherings and videotape their opinions. And it’s not because people know they’re doing something illegal. It’s because people know that even legal things can be held against them, and they don’t want to have to deal with the incovnenience of being on a mistaken no-fly list or proving their innocence. And if journalists are not allowed to check things out and write about them, independent of the government, you, the citizen, won’t know anyone else’s side of the story.

Background:

Josh Wolf attended an Anarchist protest last July in San Francisco. He published a video on his blog that got picked up by the local media since a policeman was injured during the protest.

He sent these TV stations a bill (and was paid) for using his video without his permission. Local authorities sued and then dropped their case to get Josh’s raw tapes.

Since there was also an attempt to set a SF police car on fire, the Federal Government says it has a right to get Josh’s tapes because Federal money is used for local police equipment(a minor sum). Josh denies any coverage of the incident and refuses to hand over the raw video tapes, citing his rights as a journalist.

Josh’s lawyer offers to let the judge privately scan the tapes for evidence of the attempted burning of a police car. The judge refuses.

The Federal Judge throws Josh in jail for contempt where Josh will remain till July 2007, or hands over the tapes and testifies in front of a Grand Jury.

Technorati is a blog search engine that helps you find content on blogs through tags. A lot of people have been baffled by (and sometimes annoyed at) how the technology works- “Why are those people in the Top 100?” “Why haven’t my tags shown up yet?”. We hope this video helps answer some of those questions. Enjoy!

Welcome to The Hat Factory! The Hat Factory is community office space for geeks and media hackers. We’re a group of open sourcers, video bloggers, Drupal developers, and more who are tired of working from coffee shops and home every day. All are welcome to come work here instead of a noisy coffee shop any day we’re open (usually M-F 10-6 or later). There is a core group of us (The Anchors) who pay the base rent on this place, though we’re always looking for more folks; the more Anchors, the less rent we’ll pay. There are also the folks, like possibly you reading this, that can pay a day rate (Day Trippers) and come when ever you feel like it and not have to pay da rent.
